What’s better than talking about my books? Discussing the high fantasy / dark fantasy genre as a whole.
I wouldn’t be a writer if it weren’t for the hundreds of incredible storytellers that paved the way first, and just like you, I’m a reader, too.
Fantasy is escapism, but I always gravitated toward the stories that also allowed me a certain sense of solace. I rooted myself to the flaws of characters, enthralled by the idea that my imperfections could become the greatest strengths.
My lessons on humanity, on power, and on womanhood specifically came from fantasy (and in the Divergent/Hunger Games Era, briefly Dystopian) books. I treasured most the stories where not every hero won, and yet they still managed to keep moving forward.
Knowing that about me, maybe you can see why I write the stories I do.
But which stories brought you here? I find it hard to believe my books are what got you into this reading-thing. Maybe they did (holy shit, what?), but I would like to know.
What is the first book or story (could be a novella or poem, too!) got you into reading? Was it recent that you found your way to fantasy? Or maybe it’s always been fantasy?
PSA: Also, you may be wondering why I’ve randomly shown up in your inbox on a Tuesday. The Weekly Wrath (my weekly newsletter) always sends on Sundays — so, what’s going on?
This is a Tuesday Thread. Threads is a feature of Substack I’ve not used much of, a feature meant to help build community. Think of it like a discussion thread. It’s open to you to like and comment on, as well as read others’ comments and interact with them.
I don’t want my newsletter to just be this boring, random thing all about me. I want to explore my multiverse, of course, but I also just want to talk fantasy with fellow fantasy readers. I want this to be a community and a place we can discuss our latest reads with enthusiasm (whether it’s my books or not).
I hope you’ll stay signed on and participate in the conversation. I would love to get to know each of you better! But if this isn’t for you, I totally I understand. You can learn how to adjust your personal settings here to specifically unsubscribe to only Tuesday Threads. Keep in mind if you don’t adjust your personal settings and you just unsubscribe, you will be unsubscribed from all Wrathos Books communications.

See ugh I love this because now my overflowing TBR can become even grander 👀 have you tried V.E. Schwab’s “A Darker Shade of Magic”? It didn’t scratch the Manacled itch but for me it did make me feel nostalgic because of HP. They’re very different, but the writing, the friendships, and the stellar plot gave me what I wanted in terms of magic
I began my book journey when I was like 12 with the Cirque du Freak series, which then turned into me reading everything out by Darren Shan as a teenager. I also obsessed over Brandon Sanderson when my brother introduced me to Mistborn in 8th grade. Fantasy has always been my genre!
OMG Mistborn was my entire personality for about 3 years. It was honestly my first “true” epic fantasy in the sense of a complex magic system. “For Mist and Tar” actually sprung for my love of how he made mist and metals work together! I haven’t read the cirque du freak series but I see it brought up a lot!
Wow I love that. Totally makes sense why I clicked so much with For Mist and Tar. I tell all my book friends about your book because the magic system and environment is so unique compared to all the new fantasy out there and you don't get a lot of that in this market.
Harry Potter was the song of my childhood, though I've stopped enjoying it since JKR revealed herself to be a huge transphobe. I also loved Tamora Pierce novels as a teenager — they were my real introduction to high fantasy.
Yeah I’m the same with HP, but I did read Manacled by SenLinYu (fanfic) and it was amazing. I’m glad she’s doing a read pub version that won’t be the HP world and her own!
Also I’m not familiar with Tamora Pierce?? At least I don’t think haha
The books that got me into reading was the Unicorns of Balinor series when I was 10 and I have been reading ever since! I love fantasy. It makes me feel like home whenever I read 💙

That’s so kind! I appreciate you spreading the word, word of mouth can go a long way! 🫂✨

I read both Manacled and DMATMOOBIL in quick succession last year and it gave me whiplash, but in the best way. SenLinYu is an incredible storyteller!
Tamora Pierce writes mainly YA fantasy. My favorite is Trickster duology, and The Song of the Lioness series is also stellar.

DragonLance got me in middle school and never let go. I love getting immersed in fantasy worlds.
Oh! I looked it up because I knew it sounded familiar but couldn’t put my finger on it. I must’ve heard about it while playing DnD at some point!
It’s a classic. All of the fantasy elements that we love and even easy to digest IMO.
